Hepatology Associates SIG: Avoiding Common Pitfalls in Cirrhosis Management

This program has been designed to improve the diagnosis, pharmacologic treatment and management of patients with chronic liver disease. The current data is highlighted to support effective and efficient patient-centered care. Attendees will gain the ability to utilize medical knowledge and research to provide quality, evidence-based care and to enhance interdisciplinary collaboration to improve health outcomes.
Lisa M. Richards
Lisa Richards, FNP-BC, MSN, AF-AASLD is a board certified Family Nurse Practitioner with the University of California San Diego Health System.
She received her bachelor and master’s of science degree in nursing, magna cum laude, from the University of San Diego. She is a member of AASLD and was inducted into the inaugural class becoming an Associate Fellow of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AF-AASLD).
As a Hepatology Nurse practitioner for 18 years, Ms. Richards manages complex liver patients. In addition to her Hepatology clinical expertise, she has expanded her role in the NAFLD Research Center as the Assistant Director of Clinical Research Operations. She is a sub-investigator on investigator and industry sponsored clinical trials and provides general medical oversight with the research coordinators.
She has received numerous patient and division recognition for her outstanding professional contributions. In 2009, Ms. Richards was awarded the first inaugural Advanced Practice Nurse of the year award at UC San Diego.
As a longstanding associate member of AASLD, she has served as a committee member for the Hepatology Associate Committee and co-chaired the Hepatology Associate Course. Additionally she served on the Membership/Mentorship committee and is current the Vice Chair of the Hepatology Associate Special Interest Group.

HoChong Gilles
HoChong Gilles is a board-certified Nurse Practitioner and has been working in the hepatology field since 2001. She obtained a BS in Biology and Master’s in Nursing from Virginia Commonwealth University. She graduated with a Doctorate in Nursing Practice from the University of Virginia in 2018. Her research interests include portal hypertension and liver transplantation. She is the Clinical Program Manager for Hepatology and Liver Transplant at the McGuire Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Richmond, Virginia.
Dr. Gilles is actively engaged in professional organizations including the American Association of the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD). She was the immediate past Chair of the Hepatology Associates Committee is the Chair of the Hepatology Associates Special Interest Group. HoChong currently serves as the President of the Virginia Council of Nurse Practitioners.
