This webinar will address endovascular management of gastric varices and how it compares to endoscopic management. Speakers will assess evidence for the use of TIPS and variations of the BRTO procedure for the management of gastric varices. Speakers will also discuss the use of endoscopic therapies for gastric varices and the indications for when to use varying techniques and what outcomes to expect. Lastly, the speakers will discuss future directions for investigation into management strategies.

Wael Saad

Wael Saad, MD is a Senior (Prof) Staff Clinician and Clinical Operations Head, Vascular and Interventional Radiology at the National Institute of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland. He received an MD from the Egypt-Cairo University of Faculty Medicine and completed a transitional internship at Ain Shams University Hospital of Cairo. He completed residency training in Diagnostic Radiology at the University of Rochester, where he served as Chief Resident. In 2004, he completed a fellowship in Interventional Radiology at Washington University, Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology.

Dr. Saad was an Assistant Professor of Radiology and Surgery at the University of Rochester. He obtained a secondary Assistant Professorship of Biomedical Engineering from UR and then earned a promotion to Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering. In 2007, the University of Rochester appointed him to the Directorship of the Clinical Research Division of Vascular and Interventional Radiology.

Zachary Henry

Zachary Henry, MD is a transplant hepatologist at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia. He works in both the general hepatology and liver transplant clinics and has a special interest in the management of gastric variceal bleeding. He trained in the endoscopic management of gastric varices under Dr. Stephen Caldwell at the University of Virginia and has maintained a strong multi-disciplinary clinical practice in this field. In addition, he has published multiple articles on the management of gastric varices including a recent clinical practice update for the AGA.

Cristina Ripoll (Moderator)

Cristina Ripoll, MD is currently an attending physician in the gastroenterology division of the internal medicine I department of the Martin- Luther University Halle Wittenberg, Germany. She did her GI and hepatology and transplant training in the Gregorio Marañón Hospital in Madrid, Spain. She did a post-doctoral fellowship at Yale University with Prof. Groszmann and Prof. Garcia-Tsao. Her main research interests are complications of cirrhosis and portal hypertension. She is currently the secretary of the portal hypertension SIG.
