Management of portal vein thrombosis in portal hypertension, including selection of the optimal candidates, specific anticoagulant and duration of anticoagulation are important topics that are encountered in daily practice. However, these decisions are not straight forward and need to take into account several aspects of each case, including transplant candidacy, severity of liver disease and extend of the portal vein thrombosis. Additionally, patients with cirrhosis are at increased risk of bleeding events, and risks and benefits of anticoagulation need to be individually assessed in each patient. This webinar will address common questions and controversies in the management of such patients. It is intended for hepatologists, gastroenterologists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, fellows and trainees. Others with an interest in managing patients with portal hypertension and the duration of anticoagulation are invited to attend.
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
• Identify appropriate patient selection for anticoagulation
• Define the choice and duration of anticoagulation
• Assess bleeding risk assessment
