This educational activity provides an overview of key updates in the care of pediatric liver transplant recipients, with an emphasis on the evolving recommendations for immediate post-transplant management and lifelong follow-up. Building on prior guidelines, the updated recommendations expand their focus to include intensive care management, surgical complications, immunosuppression, social determinants of health, and the developmental, metabolic, renal, reproductive, and psychosocial needs of pediatric recipients.
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
  • Describe evidence-based approaches to immediate post-transplant care, including early extubation, enteral nutrition, and prevention, recognition, and management of surgical complications.
  • Apply current principles of immunosuppression and allograft monitoring to prevent and manage rejection while identifying and addressing renal, cardiovascular, and metabolic complications associated with long-term therapy.
  • Implement a multidisciplinary, whole-child approach to lifelong pediatric liver transplant care that addresses growth and nutrition, developmental and mental health, reproductive health, medication adherence, quality of life, and social determinants of health.
