This interview explores the major advances and evolving priorities reflected in the updated pediatric liver transplantation guidelines. The discussion addresses changes in clinical practice, health equity and psychosocial assessment, emerging genetic and RNA-based therapies, timely referral, organ utilization and living donation, and key research priorities. The interview also highlights practical takeaways for clinicians caring for children with liver disease and considers how current recommendations may shape pediatric transplant outcomes in the coming decade.
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
  • Identify major advances and changes in clinical thinking that have shaped contemporary pediatric liver transplantation, including health equity, social determinants of health, psychosocial evaluation, and emerging genetic and RNA-based therapies.
  • Recognize barriers to optimal pediatric liver transplantation, including delayed referral and limited utilization of living donor and split-liver transplantation, and describe strategies emphasized in the updated guidelines to address these challenges.
  • Apply key guideline recommendations to clinical practice by identifying practical considerations for timely referral, transplant evaluation, and improving outcomes for children with liver disease, while recognizing important gaps in current research.
