This session explores the international effort to establish a unified definition and diagnostic framework for PSVD/NCPF. Rather than focusing solely on selecting a single nomenclature, experts from different regions and disciplines worked toward a shared definition of the disease and standardized diagnostic approach. The session discusses why both PSVD and NCPF remain in use and emphasizes that the key advance is agreement on what constitutes the disease, regardless of the terminology used.
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
  • Describe the rationale for a standardized definition and diagnostic framework for PSVD/NCPF, including the historical challenges associated with variable nomenclature and diagnostic criteria.
  • Differentiate the major and minor histological criteria for PSVD/NCPF and explain the evidence-based process used to establish and refine these criteria.
  • Apply the updated clinical and histological framework to the diagnosis of PSVD/NCPF, recognizing the importance of integrating clinical findings with liver biopsy interpretation.
The American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
