Join Dr. Catherine Lucero, a member of the AASLD Online Learning Committee as she interviews co-authors Dr. Lorna Dove and Dr. Michael Lucey about the newly released AASLD Guideline on Adult Liver Transplantation: Candidate Evaluation. In this 20-minute discussion, the authors highlight significant updates since the 2005 guideline, including revised recommendations for hepatocellular carcinoma and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma, new guidance for alcohol-associated liver disease, and evolving expectations for tobacco cessation prior to transplant. They also explore major changes in candidate evaluation across both deceased and living donor transplantation. This concise overview provides clinicians with practical insights into the guideline’s most important revisions and their impact on patient selection and transplant planning.
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
  • Describe key updates in the evaluation and selection criteria for adult liver transplant candidates, including changes in eligibility across major disease indications.
  • Summarize new or revised guideline recommendations specific to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA), and alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD).
  • Explain current expectations for pre-transplant behavioral health evaluation (including tobacco cessation) and how these recommendations have evolved.
