Pdf Summary
The AASLD 2025 report highlights key learning needs and practice gaps among its members derived from multiple sources. The focus areas span various liver-related disorders, with the most attention needed on Metabolic Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD) and Metabolic Associated Steatohepatitis (MASH), emphasizing comorbid conditions, diagnostic innovations, and emerging therapies. Alcohol-associated liver disease interventions require enhanced diagnosis, treatment options, and the integration of multidisciplinary care. Public policies addressing the stigma linked to alcohol use disorder are also critical. Viral hepatitis (types A through E) presents ongoing challenges in terms of diagnosis and management, especially given rising incidences of hepatitis A and C.

In hepatocellular carcinoma, focus remains on improving screening, diagnosis, and cutting-edge treatments like immunotherapy. Developing effective diagnostics and treatments for portal hypertension and autoimmune liver diseases, particularly the under-researched conditions like Primary Biliary Cholangitis (PBC) and Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC), is crucial.

The report underscores the necessity of refining treatment strategies for metabolic liver diseases and cirrhosis, alongside improvements in policies that affect epidemiological outcomes. Attention to the complexity of hepatic encephalopathy diagnosis and management, especially its impact on quality of life, continues to be significant.

Liver failure, both acute and chronic, and liver transplantation practices require enhancements, particularly in referral processes, immunosuppression, and addressing specific populations like pediatric and pregnant patients. The needs target personalized patient-focused care, spotlighting quality of life factors, palliative care, and the social determinants of health.

Lastly, improving practice management for hepatologists is essential, including bolstering skills for inpatient care, optimizing Electronic Health Records (EHR), integrating new testing methodologies, and fostering collaboration across medical disciplines. Addressing barriers such as insurance, prior authorization, and ensuring a seamless interface with primary care and specialties remain pivotal.
